Leopard setup commencing

Well I’ve been missing in action on this blog as I had been getting more involved in web development and design than Macintosh technology. However, I just upgraded my computer at both work and home and now I am running Leopard. I like it, as I do like the intel machines, too.

First things first for me. I migrated my wife’s account using the Migration Assistant. However, my account being so unwieldy, I figured I would use my terminal to copy much of my files over and decide what I wanted and what I didn’t want. Coming over from a G4 was challenging. Since I had multiple drives and partitioned drives, the Firewire target cable method wouldn’t work. I would mount a drive, but not the one I wanted. I put my mac on a ethernet network to migrate many of the files, but I also had an external firewire that had a recent backup of my user space.

After getting through that, I wanted to have apache, php and mysql setup so I could manage to do some web development locally. Fortunately Leopard comes pre-installed with Apache and php. I just had to edit the config file for Apache to use the php module. Mysql was a bit more challenging. I eventually went with the DIYMacServer method of installing mysql from the .dmg download and then re-install from source over top to make sure I had dynamic libraries.

So far so good. I like the new Terminal in Leopard. I went with a modified version of Red Sands for my Terminal skin. I lowered the transparency. I like a little transparency, but not too much in my Terminal window. I increased the font size to 13 points. I’m getting blind, what can I say.
